  • Innovation in the Dentistry Program

Launching an undergraduate program in digital dentistry is planned by the 15 years old Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Debrecen, which would be unique in the whole of Europe. This information was released at the press conference of 19th Debrecen Days of Dentistry on Wednesday.

“There have been so many novelties and innovations in the past couple of years in dentistry, which brings about great changes, as illustrated by digital systems, for example.  We have designed the new undergraduate program to correspond to the new demands and requirements, to be jointly launched by us and Semmelweis University. We aim to train dental technicians who are well-versed in digital technologies and who are equally prepared to use computers and 3D printers in the future for dental implants,” said Csaba Hegedűs at the press conference held on April 11th at 19. Debreceni Fogászati Napok in Debrecen’s convention center Kölcsey Központ.

According to the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Debrecen, there is no program like this in Europe to date, but there is a huge demand for introducing one both in Hungary and abroad.

“We expect to receive applicants for this major, which indeed is supposed to fill a specific gap in training specialists as early as the bewginning of the next academic year, while the uniqueness of the program might attract a significant number of international students, too,’ said Csaba Hegedűs.

Debrecen Days of Dentistry is one of the top-quality professional meetings in Hungary, where both Hungarian and foreign participants discuss the latest proceedings in the field of dentistry, present their most recent findings, methods, and implements. The conference, which is to end on April 13th has been organized by the 15-year-old Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Debrecen for the 19th time this year.

“The establishment of the faculty meant a major development in Debrecen’s program in dentistry. The local population could feel that they would be treated by better trained and prepared dentists, who all seem to have the technical background and necessary knowledge required for providing professional health services at a high level,” said the dean.

Since the foundation of the faculty in 2003, the number of dentistry students has increased threefold, which means that, currently, there are almost 700 Hungarian and international students altogether participating in the world-class dentistry program offered at the University of Debrecen.

“Our graduates receive a degree and a diploma which entitle them to work on their own, which is why we need to lay significant emphasis on practical training and the introduction of recently developed technologies, methods, and treatments,” said Kinga Bágyi.

The Deputy Dean for Education highlighted that, according to the most recent rankings released in 2018, the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Debrecen is at the top of the list of institutions ranked on the basis of the level of programs and the excellence of instructors and professors, while it is placed second in respect to student excellence.

“These results support the assumption that there is a high-level program is at work in our faculty and the fact that the diplomas issued by us certify internationally acknowledged proficiency,” said Kinga Bágyi.

The Faculty of Dentistry also operates as a regional center, catering for the needs of about 15 thousand patients per year, which figure keeps growing steadily every year.

“We can provide treatments with all of the state-of-the-art equipment required for 21st-century levels of dentistry, which means that all the recent innovations of digital dentistry are available to us and these constitute an organic part of daily treatment of patients,” said Deputy Dean István Varga.

Considering the innovations of the past years, he emphasized that, at the University of Debreceni, it is possible to cater for the special needs of certain patients and anaesthesia for dentistry is also an available option. These forms of treatment have not been accessible in our geographical region before, which is why these services are still unique to this day.
