  • Applied Mathematics in Focus

The most recent achievements in the academic fields of probability theory and theoretical and applied statistics are to be discussed by researchers of these disciplines at an international conference hosted by Faculty of Informatics at the University of Debrecen.

More than 120 mathematicians and statisticians from 36 different countries in the world participated in the international seminar course called XXXIV. International Seminar on Stability Problems for Stochastic Models (ISSPSM 2017) held between August 25th and 29th on Kassai úti campus by Faculty of Informatics at the University of Debrecen.

The conference was founded by Vladimir Zolotarev in the 1970s, and the University of Debrecen has acted as a host of the event for the fifth time. In his opening address, István Fazekas, the head of the organizing committee and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Informatics, elaborated on the milestones in the history of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Probability Theory and of the Faculty of Informatics, and he also recalled some of the previous conferences.

Tamás Mihálydeák, Dean of the Faculty of Informatics, believes that conferences of this kind play a decisive part in the life of the institution.

“It is essential both in the academic and research activities conducted by the Faculty of Informatics that there should be a top-level scientific background behind the practice-oriented programs offered. As each practical application requires the appropriate theoretical knowledge, the new questions generated by practical applications continue to provide significant motivation for the development of the theoretical knowledge base,” said Dean Mihálydeák.

One of the several plenary lecturers at the seminar course, Victor Korolev, a professor from Lomonosov Moscow State University, in his welcoming address underlined the importance of the excellent atmosphere of the Debrecen conferences, which successfully brings together mathematicians from various countries, who can exchange ideas, share their expertise and latest findings, and discuss open problems with one another.

In addition to Professor Korolev, 5 other lecturers have been invited to deliver plenary presentations: István Berkes (Rényi Alfréd Matematikai Intézet [Alfred Renyi Mathematical Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences] and Graz University of Technology), Siegfried Hörmann (Université libre de Bruxelles), Thomas Mikosch (University of Copenhagen), Bálint Tóth (Rényi Alfréd Matematikai Intézet and University of Bristol), and Vladimir Uchaikin (Ulyanovsk State University). During the course of the five days covered by the conference, the participants can attend more than 80 presentations delivered in three parallel sessions.
